Cedar, Pressure-Treated or Composite? Dock Decking for a Lake That Freezes

On a structure you can only reach by boat, the maintenance cycle matters more than the purchase price — which changes the arithmetic considerably.

Decking is the part of a dock everyone sees, touches and forms opinions about. It is also the wear layer — the component you will replace once or twice within the life of the substructure holding it up.

Which means the decision is genuinely about cost of ownership rather than purchase price, and on Lake George there are two local factors that skew it: annual freeze-thaw cycling, and access.

The freeze-thaw factor

Wood on a dock that ices over annually takes a specific kind of abuse. Water gets into the grain, freezes, expands, and works the fibres apart. Do that seventy times a winter for twenty winters and you get checking, cupping, splitting at fasteners, and eventually boards that are unpleasant underfoot and structurally tired.

Sealing slows it substantially — which is exactly why the maintenance schedule on wood decking is not optional here in the way it might be on a covered porch. A wood dock that has not been sealed for six years has aged considerably more than six years.

Composite does not have grain to get into. It does not check or cup, and that resistance to annual freeze-thaw is its most underrated advantage on this lake — more valuable, in our view, than the marketing emphasis on stain resistance.

The access argument

Here is the calculation most comparisons miss.

Maintenance on a dock is not like maintenance on a deck attached to your house. A meaningful number of Lake George shorelines are reachable only by water, or down a bank with no vehicle access. Every maintenance cycle on those properties means getting people, equipment and materials to a place that is genuinely awkward to reach.

If sealing your dock every three years means a boat, two people and half a day, then the "cheaper" material is not cheaper. Over twenty-five years that is eight cycles. Run that number against the price difference at installation and composite frequently wins outright — before you account for the seasons you did not get round to it and the accelerated ageing that followed.

On a property with a road down to the water and an owner who enjoys maintaining things, the answer can genuinely go the other way. It depends on your access and your appetite.

Pressure-treated pine

Choose it when budget is the governing constraint, access is easy, and you are realistic about maintaining it.

Pressure-treated southern yellow pine is the workhorse. It is strong, it is available, it is inexpensive, and properly maintained it will give you 15 to 25 years on a dock. It is also the heaviest of the three, which matters for framing design and for anyone carrying boards down a bank.

The honest caveat: PT decking left unsealed on a lake that freezes will look tired in eight years and feel tired in twelve. The material is fine. The maintenance is the deal.

Cedar

Choose it when you want the traditional Lake George look, you have bare feet and children in mind, or weight matters.

Cedar is the aesthetic choice and there is a real functional argument behind it too. It is naturally rot-resistant, it is light, and it runs noticeably cooler underfoot than either alternative on a July afternoon — which is not a trivial consideration on a surface people walk on in bare feet all summer.

Left unsealed it weathers to the silver-grey that reads as "Adirondack lake" more than any other finish. Many owners actively want that and simply let it happen. Sealed, it keeps more colour and lasts longer.

It is softer than PT and will mark more easily. On a dock that berths a heavy boat and takes serious traffic, that is worth weighing.

Composite

Choose it when access is difficult, you do not want a maintenance cycle, or you want the longest realistic service life.

The advantages on Lake George specifically: no checking or cupping through freeze-thaw, no sealing cycle, and dimensional stability that keeps a dock looking flat and uniform for decades. Hidden-fastener systems also give a cleaner surface with fewer places for water to sit.

The trade-offs are honest ones. It costs more up front. It runs hotter in direct sun than cedar — worth thinking about on a south-facing dock where people are barefoot. And it is a manufactured look; some owners want the lake to look like wood and are not persuadable, which is entirely reasonable.

Two things that matter more than the material

Fastening

Whatever you deck with, the fastening schedule decides how it ages. Boards need to be able to move without tearing themselves apart, and individual boards need to be replaceable without dismantling a bay. Hidden-fastener systems, correctly gapped, do both. Face-screwed boards through a rigid pattern do neither well.

What is underneath

New decking on a settled crib is lipstick. If the substructure has moved, the new surface will telegraph it within a season and you will have spent money on the visible 30% of the problem.

Before specifying decking, get the structure below the waterline assessed. If the cribs and pilings are sound, decking is a straightforward and genuinely worthwhile renewal. If they are not, that is the project — and the decking conversation can wait until it is done.
