What you need to know
Most Lake George dock damage is caused by ice. Water expands roughly 9% as it freezes, and on a lake that locks up in about seven winters out of ten and stays frozen for roughly 76 days, that expansion works directly against pilings, cribs and decking. Repeated freeze-thaw cycling then jacks pilings upward and walks cribs out of position. The damage usually appears in spring as a dock that is out of level, decking that has opened up, a piling standing proud of the others, or a structure that has visibly shifted toward shore. Caught in the first season it is a repair; left for three, it is a rebuild.

The mechanism, so you can spot it early
Ice does not damage docks by being heavy. It damages them by changing size.
Water expands about 9% on freezing, so an ice sheet that forms across a bay is under compression and pushes outward against every fixed thing at its edge — pilings, cribs, shoreline. Then the sheet responds to temperature: it expands on warm days and contracts on cold nights, and each cycle ratchets structures a little further out of position. That is why damage accumulates rather than happening in one dramatic event.
Separately, ice freezes to a piling. When the water level rises or the sheet lifts, it takes the piling with it — pulling it upward out of its embedment. Come spring the ice melts, the piling stays high, and the dock it was supporting is now out of level. This is ice jacking, and it is the single most common failure we are called to on Lake George.

Damage found in the first season is cheap
There is a strong economic argument for inspecting every spring, and it is not sentimental.
A piling jacked three inches in one winter can be reset. The same piling after three winters has lost most of its embedment, has probably taken its neighbours out of alignment, and has been transferring load into framing that is now cracked. The repair grows from one element to a bay to a structure. We have rebuilt docks that would have been a two-day repair if someone had looked at them thirty months earlier.

What does ice damage to a dock actually look like?
The classic signs, usually first visible at ice-out:
- Pilings standing proud of their neighbours — ice froze to the piling, the sheet lifted, and it pulled the pile upward out of the bed. This is ice jacking.
- A dock out of level or twisted along its length, from cribs that have been pushed or have settled unevenly.
- Decking opened up, with boards lifted, cupped or split at the fasteners.
- The structure moved shoreward, with a gap opening at the water end or the shore transition buckled.
- Cracked or split framing at connections, especially where a bay is restrained at both ends.
How can I reduce ice damage before next winter?
The realistic measures, in order of effectiveness: remove everything removable — floating sections, ladders, lifts, canopies and furniture — before ice-in. Have the structure inspected in the autumn so a marginal piling or a spreading crib is dealt with before it is loaded. Keep the shore transition clear of debris that will freeze into a solid mass. De-icers and bubblers can protect a specific structure but they create genuinely dangerous open water and thin ice, and their use is a serious decision on a lake with winter recreation traffic — discuss it with us and your neighbours before installing one.
Do you provide reports for insurance claims?
Yes. We document the damage photographically above and below the waterline, describe the likely mechanism and sequence, and provide an itemised scope and estimate. Adjusters generally want to see cause as well as cost, and a report that explains how ice moved a crib is far more useful to your claim than a list of materials.
When should a dock be inspected?
Twice a year is the right rhythm on this lake. Autumn, before ice-in, to catch anything that will not survive being loaded by ice — and to remove what should come out. Spring, at ice-out, to find what the winter did while it is still small. Most of the expensive failures we are called to were visible and cheap to fix one or two seasons earlier.
Is it worth repairing an old dock or should I rebuild?
The honest test is what is holding it up. Sound cribs or pilings with tired decking and hardware is a straightforward, worthwhile repair — you renew the visible 30% and keep the expensive 70%. Failing cribs under sound carpentry is a bigger job but often still worth doing, particularly if the existing footprint is larger than current LGPC rules would permit for a new build. When both have gone, rebuild. We will tell you which of the three you have.
